BAJ opens admissions for three short courses

The British Academy of Jewellery (BAJ) has announced the opening of admissions for three short courses at its Birmingham campus. Prospective students can now sign up for BAJ’s Stone Setting for Beginners, Wax Carving: Practice and Casting Theory, and Jewellery Manufacturing for Beginners programmes. Courses can be attended by both students and professionals in the industry. The three-day Stone Setting for Beginners course offers students a “thorough” introduction to stone setting techniques. Students will work with a wide range of settings and styles, adding an “invaluable skill to their jewellery making repertoire and opening their creative horizons to new and exciting possibilities”. The Wax Carving: Practice and Casting Theory course teaches practical wax carving skills for jewellery making, and provides an introduction to casting theory. The five-day course will take students through the entire process of carving, from preparing different kinds of wax and carrying out a variety of carving techniques, to finishing wax for casting. Students also complete the course with a piece that is suitable for casting. In addition, Jewellery Manufacturing for Beginners is a short course that introduces students to basic jewellery making techniques. It is “ideal for learners with an interest in jewellery making” who want to gain some practical experience before committing to a longer course. During the course, students have the opportunity to make a silver pendant from start to finish over the course of three hands-on sessions. Training is carried out in small groups across all courses, meaning that learners can receive “individual, personalised guidance” from tutors, in a safe, socially-distanced environment. Upon completion of any one of the short courses, learners receive a BAJ certificate, and will be “well placed” to pursue further jewellery training with the BAJ. Kate Rieppel, head of academy at the BAJ, said: “We’re thrilled to be welcoming learners back to our Birmingham campus with these ever-popular and exciting short courses. “These programmes are a great way for existing jewellery makers to expand their skillset, as well as a wonderful opportunity for beginners to try their hand at practical jewellery making techniques.”
